BOB BRYAN
HAS PRODUCED AN AMAZING DOCUMENTARY
VIDEO SERIES
THAT EXPLORES THE ECLECTIC WORLD OF
HIP-HOP
AND THE URBAN GRAFFITI ARTIST
Artist: MEAR
Graffiti
Verite’: Read the Writing on the Wall
is a ground breaking Documentary that includes interviews and behind-the-scenes
views of 24 Los Angeles’ most prolific and talented Graffiti Artists.
Graffiti Verite’s conversations
vary from comparative discussions on Graffiti’s ancestral connection to
ritualistic hieroglyphics and cave writings, to discussions
of Graffiti Art as a form of a "street level" propaganda, and "public art
gallery" for the anonymous public.
SINCE
EMERGING FROM THE UNDERGROUND, GRAFFITI ART HAS EXPLODED AS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT
MOVEMENT IN CONTEMPORARY ART HISTORY
With GV2:
Freedom of Expression?, Bob Bryan
has proven once again that there’s more to the Graffiti Art movement than
at first glance. Flying high above Los Angeles in a "ghetto bird",
GV2 begins
by looking down on our streets, seeking out those Artists who ply their
incendiary craft on the walls of our cities, while we sleep.
GV3
IS A POETIC VOYAGE, A MEDITATION INTO THE ICONOGRAPHY OF GRAFFITI ART!
GV3:
A Voyage into the Iconography of Graffiti Art probes
the socio-political context that distracts the average person from appreciating
the artistic and social impact of Graffiti Art. Featuring an eclectic
sound track as its emotional and intellectual core, GV3
is a compelling sensorial experience,
shockingly honest and defiantly politically incorrect!
THE
COMPLETE HOW-TO-DO VIDEO ON CREATING GRAFFITI ART
GV4:
The Basic Techniques for Creating Graffiti Art on Walls and Canvas
is the ultimate Primer/Tutorial and Step-by-Step Program on Spray Can Art.
GV4 is
a popular "must-have-Video" for Writers, Art Instructors, Art Students,
Galleries, Museums, Libraries and Educational Institutions who've been
bewildered at Spray Can Technique. As a "unique lesson plan," no other
program exists in the marketplace of ideas that can compare to the inspiration,
skill and intelligence of GV4.

( DJing ),
Break dancing, MC’ing (Rapping) and
Graffiti Art. In addition, the Curriculum Workshop will include hands-on

you can buy only one poetry program this year, buy this odyssey of 31 poets
who read, rant, and philosophize about what they do. Viewers who already
love poetry will be grateful to have so much solid poetry at hand and hear
it read so well by its creators. Those new to poetry or unfamiliar with
the art will get a gentle and stimulating education.
High school and college students, as well
as adults, should respond well to the film as there is so much here to
discuss and explore. The bonus features include complete readings. Recommended

Graffiti Verite'
Documentary Video Reviews
GV1
- GV6 DVD Preview Screenings
"This documentary helps
dispel
the prejudices against Graffiti
Art and draws the viewer
into
the world of hip-hop through
stunning visual imagery."
- Airbrush Action
"Graffiti
Verite' does for Los Angeles what Style
Wars
did for New York!"
- Art Crimes
"This fascinating documentary
chronicling urban street
art forgoes narration to let 24 young, LA based hip-hop Graffiti
Artists tell their own stories, with words and with spray cans."
-Blockbuster
Video
"The colorful, neon-like
murals seen here (far removed from ugly gang territory markings are, rather,
the brash Picasso’s of hip-hop culture."
- Booklist Review
"Appropriate and useful
classroom material..."
- Committee for The LA County Office of Education
"Intelligent and in depth.
It's 45 minutes of art, from gallery shows to the stuff on the streets.
Graffiti Verite’
is sure to open your eyes."
- Juxtapox Magazine
"The documentary’s narration
is done by the spray-painter’s themselves... they trace the history of
Los Angeles graffiti to the pre-aerosol days of the 1940’s, explaining
the evolution of lettering styles and the expansion of tagging into what
they call ‘piecing."
- Los Angeles Times
"I kept being reminded of
the works of Keith Haring and Salvador Dali. I guess in some ways
all arts begin as rebellion! The MBC would be honored to add the
program (Graffiti Verite')
to our extensive collection of award-winning documentaries!"
- The Museum of Broadcast
Communications
"The strength of your videotape
is that you focus on the commentary of the Artists... to understand their
thinking and what motivates them is really important to an appreciation
of this art form."
- The Museum of Contemporary
Art
"... The minority Artists
are so well represented and come across with such integrity, intelligence
and cultural and artistic
knowledge. This will
do a great deal to help dispel the usually wrong impression that
Graffiti Artists are anti-intellectual and
unaware of anything
other than their own wish to express
themselves..."
- National Museum,
Smithsonian Institute
"Close-up and personal!
This newly released and beautifully produced documentary uncovers the underground
Los Angeles graffiti movement and explores its relation to contemporary
hip-hop culture."
- Public Art Review
"Graffiti
Verite' is a visually hypnotic ride!"
-Remote Jockey Digest
"GV2
is truly one of the best documentaries
on Graf art that I've ever been privy to seeing. Bob Bryan is extremely
successful at depicting
Graffiti art as an unsung and unrecognized source of some of the most original
and culturally rich artwork of the 20th Century.
It likens Graffiti to the
impressionists of the early 1900's. Viewing this film makes me see the
talent that is going unnoticed in the art-world. "
-Golden Child, Hip-Hop
Now
"He credits such diverse
influences as da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rubens, Duchamp, and Japanese animation
as well as music - reggae, traditional, and hip-hop - and social and political
forces. GV4
shows Sano in action from the conception of an idea to the final execution
of his design. Once the mural is complete, he offers ideas for using aerosol
art on canvas and demonstrates its fine art potential by creating a realistic
portrait in black and white. An unusual take on an often maligned
art form, this video will inspire art students."
- Lauri Edwards, Susquehanna
Art Museum,
SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL July
2003 Issue / Multimedia Review
"He has good can control,
and was able to explain exactly what he was doing, every step of the way.
I've always been one to be against sharing our last untapped art form,
with the public, for fear it would be diluted and it's origins forgotten.
But I think videos like GV4
give it the respect it deserves, before it's looked at as just another
hip culture wagon to jump on."
~Crush One
" I've been interested in
street art for years, but growing up in an area with draconian anti-graffiti
laws, knowledge of this art-form has been elusive. Imitating the
style on paper has been easy, but the actual aerosol techniques are not.
Now, finally... someone has shared their knowledge with me, and I am more
complete for it. Sano is truly a master at his art form, and it is
a pleasure to watch him work his craft."
-Cliff - Anchorage, Alaska.

"Following multi-award winning
Graffiti Verité: Read the Writing
on the Wall, this edition
addresses
the history of graffiti - from tagging gang territory, to the importance
of letter-style to the figurative art of graffiti and its establishment
in the art world. In GV2,
we talk to many graffiti artists and see some of the expansion: graphics
for big time T-shirt companies, surf and snow board graphics, exhibitions
in private galleries, multi-media installations and the collections at
the Smithsonian."
-Filmwest Associates
"In GV2,
Bryan expands the perspective to include the views of not only LA writers
such as Chaz, Skill, Vyal and Slick but also New York legends Mare 139
and Haze. The verite' aspect of GV2
is evident in the way that Bryan allows his subjects to say their piece
without censorship or positioning quotes. GV2:
FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION?
is a stunning look at the hip-hop subculture that has developed a lifestyle
and movement of its own.
-Eric K. Arnold,
The Source Magazine
"Regarding
GV4, I liked it allot. It was timely
that an instructional tape would be produced not only to instruct but inform
viewers of the broad range of issues involved with doing a production.
-Mare 139
Writer / Associate
Producer, StyleWars DVD
"Required viewing for all
citizens of big cities that don’t understand the significance and impact
of graffiti..."
- Rap Pages Magazine
"This well-produced examination
of an underground art form, explained by the Artists who created it will
add a new dimension to Art classes and to library video collections.
We recommend its use in High School and College Art classes."
-School Library Journal
"There is a great energy
in this video! Oftentimes the film is extremely moving, provocative
and allows the audience to really understand this art form..."
-Umbrella Magazine
"The work shown in the video
is very impressive, even more so when you consider that the primary tool
here is a can of spray paint."
-Video Librarian Review
"A must - see video to understand
what is happening to the inner world of today’s urban children!"
-Wisconsin Bookwatch
"The documentary shows hundreds
of graffiti examples and lets the artists discuss, with varying degrees
of articulateness, how graffiti has evolved from street art to gallery
representation and even collaboration with such respected institutions
as L.A.'s Museum of Contemporary .Art. This video belongs in art schools
and, with its effective snapshot of mid-1990s life, in collections that
focus on popular culture."
-Library Journal
"I respect Mr. Bryan for
having the vision to offer up this impressive How-to-do video. I can't
wait to apply these new techniques on Canvas for my students in my Art
classroom."
-A. Davio / Art Instructor
"GV4
is Awesome ! My students (8th grade)
are totally inspired by it. I’d like a copy of the original Graffiti
Verite’."
-Melissa Trujillo, 8th Grade
Art Teacher
"In GV4,
there's enough info in here about conceptualizing your piece, detailing
techniques, using different caps, can control, colour fades and more to
get you started. SANO takes you through every step of the process, both
on a large wall and on Canvas. SANO's understated charisma carries the
film, and if you want to be inspired by a master at work, this movie's
unbeatable.
-Shift Magazine
"
I enjoyed GV4
the most of the entire collection. I appreciated the fact that you
chose an artist who is very talented and has the eloquence to explain his
creative technique very thoroughly minus the bravado. Anyone who is interested
in learning the basic aspects of aerosol art should
purchase
GV4. SANO
is an
artist of depth."
-James Stone
"In
a three-part format -- preliminary sketch, painting the wall, and painting
on canvas -- the film balances tutorial with cultural observation,
becoming a miniature portrait
of Sano in the process. Explaining
technique, can control,
detailing, and embracing Wild Style as “a new form of communication,” Sano’s
an engaging personality driven by an infectious enthusiasm. He creates
two pieces in GV4.
The sixty-foot mural links his signature with images that flow from atomic
devastation to hints of erotica. While it echoes his many influences (spanning
from Leonardo to anime), the work emerges as a vibrant personal offering.
Graffiti is character and declaration bared for the masses.
On a much smaller scale, Sano’s portrait of Tupac Shakur is beautifully
rendered, using black and white spray paint on canvas. Although lacking
the range of the mural, it’s far more intimate, and the evolution through
shaping and outline becomes a quietly mesmerizing procedure."
