JASON ANDREW
Astoria, New York - U.S.A.
I
grew up in Provo, Utah, strongly influenced by the Mormon Religion. The
pursuit of answers to spiritual questions was taken as sign of spiritual
weakness. Realizing the possibility of finding myself stranded in a state
of spiritual unresponsiveness and feeling the danger of living a fabricated
spiritual existence; I fought the mainstream influence.
I discovered Graffiti and defiantly combined
it with Christ images. Graffiti's rebellious and anti-social message suited
my feelings about organized religion and opened a dialogue within myself
about society and the state of the world.
I revel in the rebellious energy associated
with Graffiti and the tag carries it's own social baggage. The tag punctures
the thick, formulaic religious imagery, questioning and opening up holes
in the religious rules that keep society "in check." I believe
that spray paint is the critical element that makes my art say what it
needs to say and LOUD!
Jesus Boy series
is an attempt to dissect these statements:
"It is the tendency
of modern man to forget
God unconsciously or
eliminate him deliberately,
to live in a universe
in which he never thinks of God.
There is little use
in a Jesus
who did things almost
2,000 years ago
but who has ceased to
do them now."
